Getting to Lion Camp is an adventure on its own. Leaving Mfuwe International Airport, a 30-minute road trip takes you through villages, open spaces and rice fields bringing you to the small town of Mfuwe, which is bustling with small businesses and street markets selling almost anything from clothing to groceries.
Leaving Mfuwe behind you, two black and white steel gates welcome you in to the South Luangwa National Park, and it is here, that your safari journey begins.
An hour and a half trek through some of the most pristine wilderness areas on the African continent will bring you to the magnificent paradise we call Lion Camp.
Lion Camp is an intimate, ten suite lodge in the northern section of South Luangwa National Park, away from the main gate and the hustle and bustle of day visitors and traffic. The camp is perched on the edge of a drying oxbow lagoon covered in dappled shade from sausage trees, giant mahoganies and winter thorns. There you will experience the breathtaking views of the plains and wildlife unfold before your eyes on a daily basis.
Wake up to the call of the hyena and the sunrise over the plains teaming with wildlife. Sip your early morning coffee while watching the African bush awaken.
Depart on your activities, executed around your personal preferences with no more than four to six guests per activity. The Lion Camp site was proclaimed in the 1960s when it was a humble scout’s and walking camp, originally set up by Norman Carr. Today, a privately owned gem, an intimate luxury lodge, linking canvas and thatch suites to the main lodge with raised walkways and incorporating the original “round houses” into the lodge offering a small gym, photographic studio, shop and wildlife library.

Lion Camp is proud to have partnered with Mantis, as we share their vision and commitment of a spirit of sustainability, conservation and restoration. We currently operate a fully self-sustainable camp, supplying our own fresh water from an on-site water purifying plant, electricity from solar and generators and waste disposal processed in our onsite incinerator. We are also one of a few lodges inside the boundaries of the South Luangwa National Park to become carbon neutral.
